MMCA Residency Changdong Report 2023: My name is…

November 24 December 3, 2023

MMCA Residency Changdong, Seoul, South Korea

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Residency Changdong, will hold the exhibition which features 9 artists from 6 countries, including three domestic artists.

Names often serve as an important clue to estimate an individual’s characteristics, including nationality, culture, gender, and class. However, it also constantly oscillates through various trajectories of migration and settlement, placing one in diverse contexts. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate nonexistent and nameless entities, the “in-between” and liminal beings who are stripped of the opportunity to voice their names and make the viewers ponder the incompleteness of the systematic structure of the name itself. Such entities that transcend the dichotomy between residence and migration, and disability and non-disability, prompt the viewers to acknowledge the (im)possibilities of language and urge to explore alternative modes of communication beyond language, transcending the limitations of traditional linguistic expression.

The exhibition will also show my book “A Collection of Exercises”, created as part of a remote residency together with the poet and writer Egana Cabbarly.

The curatorial text: Svetlana Shlyapnikova.

Translation into English: Maria Bikbulatova (poetry and exercises), Anya Litovskikh (curatorial text).

Translation into Korean: Jaeyong Park.
