“Decision altitude”

February 10 — April 2, 2023

OkNo Gallery, Chelyabinsk, Russia

Curator: Svetlana Shlyapnikova

“Decision altitude” presents two new video works, which became the first reflection of the war tragedy of 2022; this project is a story about an attempt to distance from the family’s military past, about dialogue with the figure of my dead father — a lieutenant colonel of military transport aviation; about dialogue that never took place during his lifetime and was probably fundamentally impossible.

The central part of the exhibition is a video performance, which gave the name to the entire exposition. A parachute jump there is a symbolic ritual of breaking with an uncomfortable family legacy. The second video performance, “Relative wind”, was created in the north of Kazakhstan, on my father’s grave, where the parachute turned from a means of escape into a gesture of care. Complementing these works is a notebook from a personal archive, where my father’s notes on putting the aircrew on alert are mixed with my children’s drawings of the rooms of an imaginary house.
