How has the life of the artists who stayed in Russia changed since the beginning of the war? How to find visual and artistic means to talk about complex issues in this situation and what is the role of art residencies in this process? How can artists incorporate environmental practices into their work? We talked about these and many other questions with Adel Kim for the Reside/Sustain project.
For this publication, I made a small series of images in my studio to illustrate our conversation about the flickering spaces and roles.
I feel responsibility as an artist. My art has little impact on what happens globally, it does not influence thousands of people, but perhaps it can help someone to find means and tools to talk about the difficult, painful, unimaginable, and inexpressible. Now, more than ever, I realise how valuable this is. It breaks my heart that it took such a tragic event to finally understand this.
The interview took place in early September 2022. The full text is available here (English) and here (Finnish).
