In the artist book “Sunset Existed No More” Anastasia Bogomolova addresses the loss of the majority of their artistic and personal archive for the first time. In 2025 the fire destroyed many of the artist’s non-editioned works, irrecoverable installation fragments, and source materials, as well as notes, observation journals, sketches, posters, a library of publications, and significant artifacts, including items belonging to several generations of their family across Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus.

Drawing on Marina Abramović’s account of the artist Filo Filipović, who incorporated fire damage into his artwork, Bogomolova examines the ashes of their own archive not as a drama of loss, but as a testament to the continuity of the artistic process. Here, material disappearance doesn’t become a symbolic beginning of a new reckoning. Rather, the artist regards the loss primarily as part of an ongoing, active development. To affirm this, and in direct contrast to the spontaneous fire, Bogomolova intentionally burns the last artist’s copy of their previous book, “Lookbook”, integrated its ash into the handmade paper for “Sunset Existed No More”.

The physical form of the book further develops this principle. The object, slightly larger than a matchbox and infused with a bespoke fragrance, features a coptic binding. This allows the book block to be unfolded a full 360 degrees, transforming the chronicle of the fire’s twenty-four hours — from the evening of ignition to the following morning — into a cyclical narrative.
