In this work, Anastasia Bogomolova continues reflections on the economics of artistic labour, but focuses on a specific “unrealized” result and the recognition of the failure. The book centers on a long-term study of so-called Ural Europe — a territory in the Southern Urals where nearly two dozen settlements got their names from the European toponyms. Each of them is associated with foreign military campaigns of the Russian Empire or the suppression of national liberation uprisings in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The book, structured as a route not only through the region but also through artistic practice, is based on photographic documentation of expeditions from 2019–2022 and a autofiction travelogue. Its protagonist is an artist reflecting on the conflict between aesthetics and ethics in the work on projects that explore narratives of difficult heritage.
